
Quick answer: Film tools sort by labour expected, not by power. Hudl asks the least and is the default because film arrives through exchange. Sportscode and Dartfish ask the most and reward a dedicated video coordinator. Automated capture (Pixellot, Spiideo) removes the filming labour but not the watching labour. If nobody on staff owns video as a job, the high-labour tools will be abandoned by January regardless of how good the demo was.

Sort by labour, not by features
Every comparison in this category lists features. Features are a poor predictor of whether a tool gets used in February.
Labour is a good one. Ask what the tool needs from a human before it produces anything:
- Hudl: upload, or receive through exchange. Minutes.
- Sportscode: build a code window, tag a game live or after. Hours per game, and a learning curve measured in weeks.
- Dartfish: similar order of magnitude.
- Automated capture: near zero to film. Watching is unchanged.
Then compare that number against the hours your staff genuinely has. Not the hours you wish you had.
Hudl: the low-labour default
Hudl wins on distribution, not depth. Opponent film arrives because the conference standardises on it, clipping is quick, and sharing to players works.
It does not publish team pricing. Programs report roughly $400 a year at the low end to $1,500-$3,000 for fuller packages, varying by team size and add-ons. Treat that as reported, get a written quote, and ask for line items, bundles here often carry modules nobody requested.
For most high school programs this is the right level of tool, and reaching for something more powerful is the mistake.
Sportscode and Dartfish: the high-labour tier
These are serious instruments. A skilled operator with a well-built code window produces analysis a head coach genuinely cannot get otherwise.
The condition is the operator. Sportscode is not something a head coach picks up between classes, it is a system you learn. If your program has a video coordinator or a graduate assistant with real hours, this tier is where the depth lives. If it does not, this is where budgets go to die.
Both are quote-only.
Automated capture: removing the wrong labour
Pixellot and Spiideo film the game without an operator. That is real value, especially for a program that currently has a parent holding a phone.
The thing to be clear-eyed about: capture is not the bottleneck for most programs. Watching is. Automating the camera gives you more footage and exactly the same number of hours to review it, and more unwatched film is not an improvement.
Also, the hardware price is the small number. Ask for a five-year total including subscription.
The labour nobody automates
Across all four options, one step is untouched: deciding what the film means.
You still watch, still notice their big sits in deep drop, still work out that their weak-side help is late from the corner, still decide what to run because of it. Every tool above is a delivery mechanism for footage.
