The three costs, separated
Programs get this wrong by treating a camera as one purchase. It is three.

So year one looks like roughly $2,100 to $2,700. Year two looks like $599 to $699. Year five, cumulatively, looks like about $4,500 to $5,500.
That second and third line are the ones that get programs in trouble. An athletic director approves a camera as equipment, which is a capital line, and then the subscription renews against an operating budget that was never adjusted. If you take one thing from this article, take that the subscription is the real commitment and the camera is the smaller half of it.
What the plans actually differ on
The practical split between the two tiers is livestreaming.
Veo Analytics ($599/yr) covers recording, automatic upload, the auto-follow processed video, clipping and the analysis features. For a basketball program whose job is scouting, film review and player development, this is usually the correct tier.
Veo Live ($699/yr) adds the livestream. The $100 difference is worth it only if you actually intend to stream games, which is a question about your community, your gym's connectivity and whether someone will manage the broadcast, not a question about basketball.
Most basketball programs should buy Analytics. Programs buy Live because streaming sounds valuable in August, then stream twice in December.
The 5G question
The 5G model costs roughly $350 more. It earns that only in a specific situation: gyms where the wifi is unusable and uploads either fail or take hours.
That situation is more common than you would hope. High school gyms are frequently the worst-connected buildings on a campus, and a camera that records perfectly but cannot upload until Monday morning is a camera that missed the point of automated capture.
Test before you decide. Stand at your intended camera position with a phone and run a speed test during an actual game with a full crowd, not on an empty Tuesday afternoon. Crowd density does real damage to gym wifi. If you get usable upstream throughput under game conditions, save the $350.

Veo's genuine advantages are portability and transparency. It is one camera you can carry to a road game, an away tournament or a different sport's season, and you can find out what it costs without a sales call. Pixellot, which raised $35 million in April 2026 to expand its AI-as-a-service model, and Spiideo both lean toward permanent venue installation and institutional budgets.
Hudl Focus is the real decision point for most US high schools, and the deciding factor is almost never the camera specification. It is whether your conference exchanges film on Hudl. If it does, keeping capture inside that system removes friction you will otherwise absorb every week.
The question to answer before you spend $2,000
Be honest about which problem you have.
Problem A: we do not reliably get film. A parent forgets, the angle is unusable, half the possessions are cut off, road games have nothing. A fixed auto-follow camera genuinely fixes this, and $2,100 in year one is a fair price for never thinking about it again.
Problem B: we have film and we do not do anything with it. This is the far more common problem, and a camera makes it worse rather than better. You will have more footage and the same number of coaching hours. The constraint is not capture, it is the analyst time between the film existing and a coaching decision coming out of it.
Programs that misdiagnose B as A buy a camera, feel productive for three weeks, and finish the season with 24 unwatched games in higher resolution.
What we would actually recommend
For a typical high school basketball program with unreliable filming: Veo Cam 3, standard model, Analytics plan. Roughly $1,900 to $2,100 in year one, $599 after. Skip Live unless streaming is a real commitment with a named person responsible. Skip 5G unless your speed test under game conditions says otherwise.
For a program already deep in the Hudl ecosystem with conference film exchange: get a Focus quote and compare it against that Veo number, factoring in the workflow time the integration saves.
For a program that already gets decent film every game: do not buy a camera. Spend the money on the analysis side of the workflow, where the actual bottleneck is.
